In 1870, Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College was established through the Land Grant Act signed by President Lincoln on July 2, 1862. This revolutionary legislation has opened a door to higher education for the public. During this period, the curriculum setting of the school has triggered a fierce debate among politicians, the public and educators. One school believes that schools should devote themselves to the teaching of pure agricultural technology and mechanical art, while the other believes that schools should offer broader courses, such as classical literature, foreign languages, etc. As the trustee of the Board of Directors, Joseph Sullivant promoted the latter scheme through the Trust Committee. The deposit of Joseph Sullivant's heritage ensures that the school continues to promote a wide range of diverse courses.
On September 7, 1873, the school officially opened new courses. In 1878, the school was officially renamed“ Ohio State University ”In the same year, the first batch of graduates graduated from the university. In 1879, the school won the first female graduate.

Until 1998, Ohio State University had been running the Shuer Radio Telescope, the world's largest and longest used radio telescope for searching for extraterrestrial intelligence.
